First stop for UNESCO's Ocean School training

The Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission has been approached by Ocean School, a joint initiative of Dalhousie University, the Ocean Frontier Institute and the National Film Board of Canada created to engage the public, in particular students, to foster ocean literacy. Ocean School focuses on ocean science, technology and innovation – giving an insight into marine careers and the social, economic and cultural dimensions of the human relationship with the ocean.

Building better ocean leaders

When Dalhousie University threw its support behind the creation of the Ocean Frontier Institute (OFI), the primary objective was to ensure that ocean-related research received the long-term funding it required. As a result of Dal’s leadership that goal is well on its way to being achieved — to date, ten projects at Dalhousie have received a total of $9.4 million, with a second phase of funding expected to begin in 2019.

Discovery Award winner: emerging professional

OFI researcher Erin Bertrand was honoured with a Discovery Award win in 2018, which named her best 'emerging professional' — a reflection of her work in understanding how warming temperatures and other stressors may change the nutrient requirements of phytoplankton which are crucial in the relationship between the ocean and the amount of carbon in the atmosphere.
